11:44 am - how to balance your bank account and wardrobe?
So yesterday I went shopping for clothes to wear for a family friend's weddding.

I came back with a new bag. I added it to my collection of seventeen handbags.

And a blouse (that's not nice enough to wear to a wedding). Well, uh, nine blouses is not too much, is it?

And a black woollen vest. Back to school in a month, you know...

And I just had my birthday&name day and got a total of 100 euros from relatives, so...

I totally also wanted to buy: shoes. jeans. jacket.

totally going shopping tomorrow.

03:18 pm - fyi: i love strawberries
Who would've thought, that after three weeks with a basic account on Livejournal, it's the tracking that I miss? Right, right, I can track with Basic account too, but only 25 events, of which 6 are mandatory (LJ's new announcements, comments notifications, friending...) and 6 for mod posts in various communities (which I don't watch but am a member of) and 3 for my fics that are posted by someone else (like in fests).

So basically that's only 10 left for free use D: AND FOR A STALKER LIKE ME THAT'S CLEARLY NOT ENOUGH. D:

And speaking of stalking.

flawedamythyst posted a Narnia fic, Back-Dated, which is Peter/Edmund with a side of Peter/Caspian, movie-verse, and it's so amazing, god, I have read it like six times by now and it continues to be amazing, and I squeed and squeed. And angsted! Because it's angst! And I think it's good that Amy probably doesn't realize how much I love that fic, or she would be regretting ever giving me her address, because ENGLAND IS NOT THAT FAR, you know! and I might show up at her doorstep begging for autographs.

*

The other I stuck up most of the cards I've received, and now my door looks gorgeous. I was also thinking about mail and stuff yesterday, and decided that again, I'd love to send some mail. Anyone wanting to receive some? :D I don't know yet if they'll be cards or letters or what... If you want surprise!mail from me, please feel free to e-mail your address to sivulinen@gmail.com! I skipped Christmas cards last year, after all. And of course it will take me time to send them because:

On Sunday, I'm going camping, and will be gone pretty much for two weeks. Not that many of you will notice :D

And after that I'm tutoring foreign students! Whee!

That book meme was certainly good in giving me a kick to start reading. I read the first part of Täällä pohjantähden alla, aka Under the North Star by Väinö Linna in three days. Have only been meaning to read that for the last four years, occasionally even taking it out of the library, but then never managing to start it. *sigh* Now Sister M luckily owns it, so I could get started the moment I felt like it :D And now I loved the first part and Dad is currently reading the second part, so I don't know what to do! I would feel so bad stealing his book, after all.

It's a really fascinating book. It's a historical book of Finnish history, the first part taking place before Finland becomes independent. The main characters are crofters or other commoners, and socialists like all of that class at that time, and it's funny how I find myself agreeing with their opinions, though now I so do not support the left. Though of course back then they were almost slaves, and so very much entitled to demand that the society should be fairer in terms of income distribution etc...

Another funny thing is the awkwardness there is between people and their strange relationships! Like how awkward a vicar and his crofter are in each other's company when they meet for the first time, or how the children talk so respectfully to their parents, even among the common people, or how different courting was back then :D Which reminds me, that I was a bit pissed off when I was reading it and couldn't remember who Akseli (kind of main character) marries, and then I remembered one of the most beloved wedding valses being called Akseli and Elina's wedding valse, so uh, kind of SPOILED ME. Even if I have seen a play based on the book, so I should have known it anyway. There are just so many characters that I can't remember what happens to whom >__<

In other, totally unrelated news, I'm going to be an international tutor in my university in August, meaning tutoring foreign students, and today I found who my tutorees are going to be! Degree students from Ghana, China x 2, Hungary and someone probably from Estonia/Lithuania/Latvia. Exchange students from Europe would have been the easiest, but ah well, I hope I can manage the visits to the police station and stuff that I have to do with them *g* I'm excited! *starts writing an e-mail to them*

Eh. Parents just bought a new summer cottage for us. Or, to be precise, it's still just the land, so we get to build all the buildings there by ourselves.

MUM: And, I mean, it's good for dad too, he gets to take out some energy there.
SIVU: So basically, you bought a 50,000 € toy for him?
MUM: Well, he is of Certain Age now. And it's An Investment! We can Sell It if we want!

During the whole process I've been really sceptical, and I kept on telling them how now is not the best time to take a loan, what with the uncertainties in the economy. However, now I'm kind of excited too ^___^

11:50 am - Meme seen like, everywhere on my flist, and somehow it's always as interesting
Apparently The Big Read thinks that average adult has only read 6 out of these top 100 books they've printed.

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicise those you intend to read
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon them

That's... 33 read? Did I count right?

Also, like with Great Expectations, I think there are a few books there that I might have read but just don't know the English title for ^__^;;

Feel free to rec any that I haven't read - even those I have italiced; it'll make me read them sooner!

03:17 pm - because my heart is bursting with joy for fandom and the fic it produces
Boys Don't Cry - reminding me why Harry/Draco was and is and will be my ~*~OTP~*~ over all the other pairings now and forever. There is this one scene where Harry is supposed to handcuffs Draco to bed because he's their prisoner but instead he jerks Draco off before hopping off of him and finishing his job of handcuffing *______* NOW WITH 110 PERCENT MORE CRUEL WORDS AND MISUNDERSTANDINGS. Also, it has fanart like this! *sobs for her boys who don't cry*

Penitence - reminding me that it's emotion that makes things hot, not which bit goes where. (If you are not a member of The ASS fest comm, here's another link.) Touching and kissing will be the end of me, I swear ♥______♥

Go, and the Importance of Mountain Climbing - reminding me why Hikaru no Go is the story with answer to all the questions of life. What is more, it manages beauty and epic rivalry the entire time it philosophizes!!!

09:23 am - Hikago Q&A
[info]epigrammist's Hikago meme!

1. Beginning with the obligatory question: how did you discover Hikago? Well. My sister's friend was into anime. She taped Fruits Basket on VHS for us years ago. On the tape there was accidentally the three first episodes of Hikago, until it cut off when Hikaru starts playing with Touya Kouyo. I WAS SO HOOKED. I made that friend to give us the rest of the anime on CDs and then I watched it in a really short time. ^___^

Rest under the cut. Might have tiny spoilers. )

25. Now make up your own question and answer it: Shouldn't everyone watch Hikago? YES!!!!

*

I have so many other things about which I should write here, too, but I've already procrastinated enough, so. Later!

So I'm reading some scientific literature for school essays now.

And waah, I feel like they are so spoilery D: Like, on the first chapter they reveal all the important findings to come in the later chapters! ;___; Why can't they just hint to it, so that there's the excitement of them slowly walking with me through their findings and then ta-da! there is it, proven how much value knowledge spillovers have for semiconductor firms! or something.

I haven't actually written any proper essays at university, yet. Yes, I realize that's quite pathetic since it's already my third year. B-but. My major kicks ass like that. We are all such slackers! :D And now I'm of course really nervous about it and about whether I'm going to finish them on time (total of 16-20 pages in two weeks), and so I haven't even had the time to read the novels I have started or watch more of The Legend, this awesome Korean drama or play these silly computer games I downloaded :D Something to look forward to, eh? :|

Am I being an elitist bitch, when my very good friend is on student exchange in Germany, and she's having family/friends visiting her practically all the time, and her other Finnish friend is visiting Finland for a week in the middle of the exchange, and all I can think of is "how boring that must be you aren't really being there on your own you are not getting the whole experience my exchange was so much cooler?"

:D

In other news, I quit my summer job (after two months - yeah I started it already in April) and decided to spend my summer studying instead. ^___^ I hope I won't regret this (ie, run out of money..).

Now I'm wondering if I should celebrate this by signing up for some summer fic fest...

10:04 am - RL update
So, I'm staying at the parents' for the weekend, and when I got up today (Sunday morning) at 9, my dad was outside moving the snow around and my mum was at work doing some paperwork. HELP. Now they'll expect me to do something before noon, too!

Anyway. I've been busy and totally not reading my flist, because I still don't have the Internet at New Home. It's because I can't decide on the provider. Feel free to link me to stuff, even if it's "Look look I made a post here and no one commented so give me some love!!!"

And I started working. It's... I call people and try to sell them mobile phone subscriptions? what are they in English? This far I've only called existing customers and offered them a cheaper deal - it does without saying that it has been fun, because they all are so delighted, but now we will start calling new customers (after one week! I still don't know what to do!) so I expect it to become less pleasant. Well, we are paid well, and by hour, not by how much we sell, so I'm not taking any pressure.

Only thing is, I'm also supposed to be able to sell them mobile PHONES, if they want them, and I don't know anything about those. HELP.

But I'll be rich by the end of the summer?

10:37 am - On Finnish DH; and a magic question about DH
I finished reading the Finnish translation of Deathly Hallows yesterday. I still have trouble believing, sometimes, how very real the characters are for me. How life-shaping that book series has been for me. How much I love it, despite the flaws I see in it.

Like I was commenting to Sister K the other day, when I was reading a critic's review for the translated Deathly Hallows: the review was positive, and I was like, "how can they say all these good things about this, when there's X and Y and maybe Z to complain about!" and then, wihtout taking a breath, "of course, if they said anything bad about it, I would be livid because it's just that brilliant."

You can mock, but only with love. Only when you know what you are talking about. When it's Harry Potter we are talking about.

The translation was good, in general, except I still ran about every ten pages to double-check something, either from English DH to see if something had really been said like that, or from earlier translation, to see if something had really been translated like that before.

The translated names grew on me; now I quite like that hallows is translated as varjelukset, even though at first I thought that I got a bit different feeling from that. "Doge" translated as "Doze" annoys me, though!

There are a few mistakes in the text, and I wonder if I should contact the publisher so they can fix it for later editions: for example, Snivellus is translated in OotP but not in DH; once Harry draws Draco's sword, not wand... And, um... He really gets this room translated as He really deserves this room when I think it's understands. Right?

Also, sometimes I think I notice that the translator speaks a different dialect than I do. Or at least, some of the words used are words I would never use and sometimes don't even know the meaning of (the legendary one being, of course, from CoS: Draco "smirking" expressed with a word härpittää, which I have never heard and no one I have asked has either.)

Okay, so time to stop being an obsessed freak, Y/N? Y.

(I still hyperventilated-slash-cried, both when Snape died and when Harry walked into the forest.)

In somewhat related subject... My friend, who is a fan but not in fandom, asked me a question about HP magic, and, uh, though I know that it's a fruitless subject to talk about and to try to find logic in, I thought I'd throw this question out there and see if someone else has good answers.

Her question was:

On page 568: "He took your blood believing it would strengthen him. He took into his body a tiny part of the enchantment your mother laid upon you when she died for you. His body keeps her sacrifice alive, and while that enchantment survives, so do you and so does Voldemort´s one last hope for himself."

I don't understand how Lily's protection suddenly jumps up again... It was supposed to end when Harry turned 17, right? Shouldn't the protection end inside Voldemort then, too? So somehow Voldemort killed himself from within Harry and Harry from within himself, but somehow not all of Harry?

My fumbling interpretation would be that Lily's protection is separate from the protection at Privet Drive (made by Dumbledore, exploiting Lily's protection); that while DD's protection breaks when Harry turns 17, Lily's protection doesn't, specifically because Voldemort took Harry's blood. But I can't reference any books for the fact that Privet Drive protection is made by Dumbledore or that Lily's protection won't break, because I'm too lazy and the books are in my apartment, not here at parents' home where I'm now...

And that personally, I like to think that somehow the Hallows protected Harry from dying completely, because otherwise there is no point to the Hallows (except to make Harry and Voldemort related via Pewerells!) and that annoys me. I doubt anything in the books or JKR's interviews supports that theory, though, but frankly, I don't care :D

Opinions? ;)

10:33 am - Oofuri flailing ♥ And a confession of failing.
As for what I did yesterday, instead of being on LiveJournal*: I browsed IJ. It continues to give me a fuzzy feeling.

And I watched Oofuri.

And.

ASJDHKFD! I wish I could squee to Muse about Oofuri, because she is a Golden Pair shipper and would understand. But I never see her these days.

What's so wonderful to me, in Oofuri, at this point (ep 4), is the relationship between Abe and Mihashi. It goes with Abe seeing the potential in Mihashi, Mihashi wanting to impress Abe but being massively insecure about his pitching and not believing Abe believes in him; and now, Abe has also realized that he has to make Mihashi see that he needs Abe and that they'll make the most fantastic pair as pitcher/catcher who work together and asfgklk. It's like seeing the Golden Pair get together, not just watching them be married. And I've always been one to go for get-together fics, not established relationship ;)

One another thing I've been wondering, when watching this, if I'm too hasty to write off some things as cliches. Because I haven't watched too much sports anime, I haven't gotten used to certain things and so, when I see them occur in two or three animes I think "oh this is a cliche for this genre". I think if I had watched more, I'd just think "oh this is normal". I wonder if it's really easier to pick cliches from something you are not used to, than from something you have seen hundreds of versions of? Because by then it'll be the norm? Or because at first you think that if there's the same thing in two shows it must be in a dozen more, too, because how else would you have come across such thing twice?

I noticed the same when I gave k-dramas a shot; when the same thing occurred in Full House and then in Coffee Prince, I decided it was a cliche for kdramas, not that, uh, I would somehow pick shows with similar characteristics...

*AT TWELVE OH EIGHT I ACCIDENTALLY BROKE MY LJ BOYCOYTT (but not the strike). But see, I have an explanation :(

I was on Facebook, and saw on my feed that one of my best friends had changed her website to be her travelling blog (she's going on student exchange to Germany). So of course I wanted to see what it was like and I clicked and read the first entry and then I started to bookmark it when I realized that IT'S ON LIVEJOURNAL OH MY GOD I WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO GO THERE TODAY. So I just bookmarked it and exited, without commenting - so see, I still honoured the strike!

I'm having lots of friends coming over to New Home today :) First two of my high-school friends, then one of sister K's friends who is kind of mine too. And a fourth one should visit during Easter Holiday too! Yay.

04:16 pm - YouTube videos, but first some blathering
I've realized that I can't use HTML editing in the first few sentences of my posts because that will break the RSS feed to LiveJournal. Pfft. I'm going to participate in the one day strike (No posts. No comments. No content.), not because I think it will necessarily work, but because I love fandom activism and in general think that doing something is better than doing nothing (even if some idiotic guy then thinks it's blackmailing and oh, that would make me want to leave LJ if I hadn't wanted to already!)

And because of that, I really hope that many people do the "meta friday" on IJ, so that there will be lots of stuff to do instead ^^

But anyway, this post was really to bring to you two awesome YouTube videos!

A Kate Ryan song with alternative Swedish lyrics instead. It won't probably be funny unless you understand at least the basics of Swedish (or actually you can guess. There are pictures.)

And! A Japanese video, combining gymnastics and language studies.

In other news: I have watched the two first episodes of Oofuri, and it is love.

As is Easter holiday ♥ ♥

02:43 pm
Now I created an RSS feed of my IJ to LJ (sivullinen_ij). I hope at least some of my LJ friends will friend that ♥

LJ is not going to get any better. After Strikethrough, I was thinking that maybe they'll learn their lesson. Obviously they haven't, but continue to do even more sucky things. The most recent one that I found out about is that they don't show a truthful "popular interests" list - they have removed things such as fanfiction from there. What a way to show that you don't really want fandom on LJ, guys.

The popular interests list is here. Can you find the one that, like [info]stewardess says, "has always had a lower number than either [fanfiction or porn] —an interest that would not be showing up if the disappearance of porn and fanfiction was due to natural causes" of those things not being as interesting anymore? ^__^ YOU WILL KNOW WHEN YOU SEE IT.

So. Anyway. Let's go find out what exciting things IJ has!

I truly, really want to start using my IJ more. I can't say I have any trust for LJ left, and the only reason to stay there is the comms and the people. I don't know what would be the best way to make the move. I can't just close all my LJ tabs (currently: 13 open omg i need help) and tell myself that it's okay. I'm debating defriending all my Harry Potter communities (because there are so many active in IJ, that I would still get my daily dose) and all my RSS feeds (because I could probably get them here too; I could beg someone with a Paid Account to create something if it doesn't exist already, I suppose).

I always promise myself I'll start posting more to IJ, but then I forget. I hate crossposting, because I don't like Semagic and it's more effort to crosspost. I'll try again? Maybe I should create a feed to LJ for my IJ, and then my friends could watch that?

*sigh*

Geez, people, you disappoint me! Why has no one posted about this before, except [info]kabal42?

Radcliffe gets an award. But really you want to see what happens at the end. Because there is gay.

There's a longer vid, too, but it goes wonky for me. But the gay kiss lasts 10 seconds.

12:07 pm - Book rec: The Princess Bride, by William Goldman
I posted a book rec to [info]book_recs, so here it is for you as well:

My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

EVERYONE, YOU MUST READ The Princess Bride: S Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure.

Perhaps you have seen the movie The Princess Bride? I had, and I heard stories about The Book, but it took me way too long to get my hands on it (and when I did, it was in .pdf format, so if it's not in your library... *wink*). With the words of the author, it has everything a good book has:

Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Hunters. Bad men. Good men. Beautifulest ladies. Snakes. Spiders. Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passion. Miracles.

This is a parody of fairy tales, yet at the same time, it's quite frankly the best fairy tale I have ever read, because it has it all. It makes fun of other books of its genre as well as itself, at the same time it manages to be full of truths of life such as

“Sonny, don’t you tell me what’s worth while—true love is the best thing in the world, except for cough drops. Everybody knows that.”

It has two adorable friends who start as villains but become good guys, who make up rhymes when they are in a tight spot. It has a dashing hero and her beautiful girl. It has pirates. It has the evil Prince who is insane but, because we get his point of view as well, whose actions make sense.

This was more than a pleasurable reading experience. I'm going to order it from Amazon as soon as I decide if I want it hardcover or paperback. What I most loved was the humour and the romance. I jumped up and down at my favourite parts, force-showed them to my sister, laughed - no, roared with laughter. And the romance... well, here, see The Most Wonderful Love Confession Of All Time (taken from the first chapter, so spoilers up to that point): )

But let me tell you, it's not lacking in action, either.

Have you read it? Tell me, what was your favourite part? Chapter One. The Bride? The climb up the Cliffs of Insanity? Prince Humperdinck’s Zoo of Death?

...okay, done quoting the book. (My favourite, obviously, is the above scene, although continued a bit.)
